All the Laughs! – Got 2B Real

I’m supposed to be getting a lesson together; I’m supposed to have an agenda ready; I’m supposed to be good to go for this person coming to me in three hours, but I don’t have any of it, and I can get it together because I can’t stop laughin’.

I made the mistake of releasin’ the Kraken. Yes, I fooled around with “Got 2B Real” this morning, which I’d laid to rest a year ago, and now that I’ve re-opened the can, I can’t stop rollin’. I just can’t.

Is it vulgar? Yes.
Irreverent? Maybe.
Do I care? Nope.

I think it was 2013 when I found out about it, and I’ve been hooked ever since. It’s so bad — my liking for it — that I can’t entertain it regularly because I indulge it at the expense of everything else.

As quiet as it’s kept, although I’m silly, I’m not a fan of most stand-up and comedy shows, and chances are that if you think something is funny, I’ll think it’s insipid or just dumb as hell — not because I’m a contrarian, but because most of what passes as funny is based on trite tropes about race, gender, sex, and politics or rubbery physical expression.

Such, fortunately, is not the case with Patti LaHelle’s “Got 2B Real”, a reality show parody featuring parodied likes of Patti LaBelle, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Fantasia, Mariah Carey, Beyonce Knowles, Dionne Warwick, Mary J. Blige, and The Braxtons, with appearances by Oprah Winfrey, Janet Jackson, Prince, Jay Z, and Christina Aguillera. Between the quickly delivered quips, vocal likeness of the characters, timing, and balance between consistency and variety of relevant, borrowed videos and images, I cracks (yes, “cracks”) up.

There are similar shows in The Tube, but the quips are stale, there’s lackin’ continuity between the images, and — I don’t know — they just don’t do it for me.

My sister, Valerie, is a Harry Potter fan, so I’m posting an episode with a HP reference. I recommend starting from the beginning, though.
